KEY POINTS
  • During 2014-15 it is estimated that 5.3 million tonnes of fertiliser was applied to a total of 49.1 million hectares of agricultural land by approximately 67,000 agricultural businesses.
  • Nitrogen based fertilisers (excluding slow release) were applied to 32.3 million hectares of agricultural land, accounting for 66% of all fertilisers applied.
  • Ammonium phosphates and urea continue to be the fertilisers applied most widely, and were applied to 13 million hectares and 11.6 million hectares respectively during 2014-15.
  • Western Australia remained the largest user of nitrogen based fertilisers, with Urea and Ammonium phosphates being the most used fertilisers in the state with 295,000 tonnes of ammonium phosphates being applied to 4 million hectares and 299,000 tonnes of urea being applied to 3.7 million hectares.
