Sydney has a higher proportion of "working age" population

Sydney had a higher proportion of people aged from 18–54 years compared to the rest of NSW, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

In the last five years the dependency ratio in NSW dropped from 51.0 in 1994 to be 49.9 in 1999. This is a consequence of accelerated growth in the 15–64 years age group. The Mid-North Coast had the highest dependency ratio (64.6) while Sydney had the lowest (45.9). The dependency ratio is a measure of the "dependent" population (aged 0–14 years and 65 years and over) compared to the "independent" population (aged 15–64 years).

The population of NSW continued to age in 1999. People aged 85 years and over accounted for 1.3 per cent of the NSW population at June 1999 (compared to 1.0 per cent in 1994). Within Sydney, Hunter's Hill had the highest proportion of people aged 85 years and over (3.4 per cent), while Campbelltown had the lowest (0.4 per cent). Outside of Sydney, Windouran (3.7 per cent) had the highest proportion of people aged 85 years and over, while Yarrowlumla—Pt A (0.4 per cent) had the lowest.

The median age of the NSW population at June 1999 was 34.6 years for males and 36.0 years for females. Murrumbidgee had the lowest median age for both males (33.5 years) and females (34.8 years), while Mid-North Coast had the highest median age for both males (39.0 years) and females (40.0 years).

This year's publication includes an expanded commentary section. Also, for the first time, maps of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification areas in NSW have been included as a guide to users.
