RESULTS BY HOUSEHOLD TYPE
RESULTS BY HOUSEHOLD TYPE
There are conceptual differences in the way that the housing and financial and insurance services groups are treated in the ALCI and CPI. See the Explanatory Notes for further detail.
Employee households
The index for employee households increased 0.7% for the December quarter 2009 mainly due to increases in interest charges, domestic holiday travel and accommodation, fruit, beer, rents and overseas holiday travel and accommodation. The major offsetting decreases were provided by automotive fuel, audio, visual and computing equipment and pharmaceuticals.
The ALCI for employee households showed a higher increase than the CPI (+0.5%) for the December quarter 2009.
The index for employee households increased 0.4% for the year to December quarter 2009 mainly due to increases in electricity, rents, insurance, hospital and medical services and beer. The major offsetting decreases were provided by interest charges, automotive fuel, audio, visual and computing equipment and overseas holiday travel and accommodation.
The ALCI for employee households showed a smaller increase compared to a much larger increase in the CPI (+2.1%) for the year to December quarter 2009. Employee households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on financial and insurance services than the wider CPI population group (which comprises total metropolitan households). The interest charges component of financial and insurance services for employee households recorded a significant decrease for the year to December quarter 2009, and for conceptual reasons this item is not included in the CPI.
Age pensioner households
The index for age pensioner households increased by 0.6% for the December quarter 2009 mainly due to increases in fruit, domestic holiday travel and accommodation, electricity, rents, vegetables, beer and insurance. The major offsetting decreases were provided by pharmaceuticals, automotive fuel and audio, visual and computing equipment.
The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a slightly larger increase than the CPI (+0.5%) for the December quarter 2009.
The index for age pensioner households increased by 3.2% for the year to December quarter 2009 mainly due to increases in electricity, insurance, rents, hospital and medical services, water and sewerage and house repairs and maintenance. The major offsets were provided by automotive fuel, interest charges and vegetables.
The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+2.1%) for the year to December quarter 2009. Compared to the wider CPI population group, age pensioner households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on food and health - both of which recorded increases for the year to December quarter 2009.
Other government transfer recipient households
The index for other government transfer recipient households increased by 0.6% for the December quarter 2009 mainly due to increases in fruit, rents, interest charges, domestic holiday travel and accommodation, electricity and beer. The major offsetting decreases were provided by automotive fuel, pharmaceuticals and audio, visual and computing equipment.
The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a slightly higher increase than the CPI (+0.5%) for the December quarter 2009.
The index for other government transfer recipient households increased by 2.3% for the year to December quarter 2009 mainly due to increases in rents, electricity, insurance and tobacco. The major offsets were provided by interest charges and automotive fuel.
The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a slightly larger increase than the CPI (+2.1%) for the year to December quarter 2009. Compared to the wider CPI population group, other government transfer recipient households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on food and alcohol and tobacco - both of which recorded increases for the year to December quarter 2009.
Self-funded retiree households
The index for self-funded retiree households increased by 0.6% for the December quarter 2009 due to increases in domestic holiday travel and accommodation, fruit, overseas holiday travel and accommodation, beer, insurance and interest charges. The major offsetting decreases were provided by automotive fuel, pharmaceuticals and audio, visual and computing equipment.
The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed a slightly larger increase than the CPI (+0.5%) for the December quarter 2009.
The index for self-funded retiree households increased by 2.8% for the year to December quarter 2009 due to increases in electricity, hospital and medical services, insurance, water and sewerage, house repairs and maintenance and property rates and charges. The major offsets were provided by interest charges, overseas holiday travel and accommodation, automotive fuel and audio, visual and computing equipment.
The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed a slightly larger increase for the year to December quarter 2009 than the CPI (+2.1%). Self-funded retiree households have a relatively lower proportion of expenditure on financial and insurance services, which had a large decrease for the year to December quarter 2009. Self-funded retiree households also have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on health and recreation - both of which recorded increases for the year to December quarter 2009.
