HOSPITAL CHARACTERISTICS
Accreditation
Hospital accreditation has been identified as an indicator of capability within the National Health Performance Framework (for further information refer to Australian Hospital Statistics 2012-13, produced by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)).
As at 30 June 2013, 321 hospitals obtained their accreditation from smaller organisations included in the Other category. The most reported accreditation agency was the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) (used by 296 hospitals) followed by the BSI Group (previously Benchmark Certification) which was reported by 68 hospitals. Private Acute and psychiatric hospitals in New South Wales were less likely to hold ACHS accreditation than Acute and psychiatric hospitals in other states (47.8% in New South Wales, compared to 71.8% in Victoria and 68.5% in Queensland). The state with the lowest proportion of ACHS accredited private Day hospital facilities was Victoria (20.7%).
