New motor vehicles sales slowing: ABS Trend figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that total new motor vehicle sales have remained relatively constant over the last four months, with May 2002 figures falling slightly (0.2%) compared with the previous month. New passenger vehicle sales declined for the fourth consecutive month with a 0.7% fall. Growth in other vehicle sales continued to slow with an increase of 0.9% compared to the previous month. Seasonally adjusted sales of total new motor vehicles fell by 0.3% in May 2002 with a fall in passenger vehicles of 2.2% and a rise in other vehicles of 3.3%. The fall in May 2002 was not consistent across the States and Territories with rises recorded in Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
