Adelaide Housing Costs Amongst Lowest in Australia Of the 69 mainly urban regions across Australia, Adelaide had some of the lowest housing costs, according to a report released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Western Adelaide (Statistical Sub-Division, or SSD) had the lowest median rent in Australia of $114 per week; while Northern Adelaide (SSD) was third lowest with $117 per week. Northern Adelaide (SSD) also had the lowest median weekly mortgage repayment in Australia ($163 per week), with Southern Adelaide (SSD) fourth lowest at $176. The report used results from the 2001 Census of Population and Housing to describe the major differences in the socio-demographic characteristics of people living in different parts of Australia. However, to give more evenly sized regions, SDs in populous areas have generally been disaggregated to Statistical Sub-Divisions (SSDs) or Statistical Region Sectors (SRSs).
