AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)

NAME OF COLLECTION

Work-Related Injuries (WRI)

OVERVIEW

The Survey of Work-Related Injuries (WRI) was compiled from a Multi-Purpose Household Survey (MPHS) topic conducted throughout Australia from July 2005 to June 2006, as a supplement to the Labour Force Survey. The WRI was previously collected in September 2000 as part of the supplementary survey program. Due to changes in the collection methodology of the 2005-06 WRI Survey, users should exercise caution when comparing estimates from the September 2000 survey. For further details about comparability with the September 2000 WRI Survey see paragraph 21 of the Explanatory Notes Work-Related Injuries, Australia, 2005-06 (cat. no. 6324.0). The next WRI is scheduled to be collected in 2009/2010.

The WRI collects information about persons aged 15 years and over who worked at some time over the 12 months to June 2006 and who experienced a work-related injury or illness in the same period. The WRI collected the following details about the most recent work-related injury or illness: whether they suffered the injury or illness in their current job or a previous job, the type of injury or illness experienced, how the injury or illness occurred, the number of days/shifts absent from work due to the injury or illness, sources of financial assistance, whether they applied for workers' compensation, and the reason they did not apply for workers' compensation. This information can be cross-classified with labour force characteristics and demographics such as occupation, industry and sex as well as Data items relevant to migrants and ethnicity.

The purpose of the WRI is to provide information on the extent of work-related injuries. Data collected in the survey will assist in monitoring programs and formulating policies in relation to workers' compensation and occupational health and safety.

The WRI was collected as a topic within the MPHS along with four other topics: Participation in Sport and Physical Activity, Sports Attendance, Attendance at Selected Cultural Venues and Events, and Household Use of Information Technology.

Similar surveys have also been conducted for individual states including Work Related Injuries and Illnesses, New South Wales (cat. no. 6301.1), Work Related Injuries and Illnesses, South Australia (cat. no. 6301.4) and Work Related Injuries and Illnesses, Northern Territory (cat. no. 6301.7).
