About this Release	AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS) NAME OF COLLECTION Survey of Income and Housing (SIH) OVERVIEW The Survey of Income and Housing (SIH) is a household survey collecting information on the income, personal and household characteristics of a sample of households resident in private dwellings throughout Australia. Some cycles from 2003-04 also collect information on household net worth. The objective of the SIH is to facilitate analysis and monitoring of the social and economic welfare of Australian residents in private dwellings. Income data are used for poverty studies, planning income support, taxation policy and comparing the well-being of individuals or groups of individuals. Housing data are used in housing affordability studies and devising housing assistance schemes. Main users include government and other social and economic analysts involved in the development, implementation and evaluation of social and economic policies. Income sources (and other financial information), labour force, employment and other personal and household characteristics can be obtained from the survey and cross classified with Data Items Relevant to Migrants and Ethnicity. From 2003-04 the SIH was integrated with the Household Expenditure Survey (HES) which is conducted on a six year cycle. The SIH was run in most years from 1994-95 to 2003-04, however, from 2003-04 it is being conducted biennially (i.e. 2005-06, 2007-08, 2009-10) with a HES component every third cycle (2009-10). The 2002-03 survey had a sample of about 10,000 households, and the 2003-04 survey about 11,000. Earlier surveys had a sample of about 7,000 households. DATA AVAILABILITY The Migrant Data Matrices provide a link to summary data on migrants from the Survey of Income and Housing.The data items included in each datacube are not exhaustive, but rather a selection of the data available. Care must be taken in comparing data from different collections presented in the Matrices due to differences in survey methodology, definitions and reference periods.
