Tasmania's highest fertility rate was recorded in Flinders (4.5 births per 1,000 population) followed by Brighton (2.6), according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

This is just some of the regional data that can now be found through the new ABS data navigator, making it easy for local communities to view a wide range of different data for their area.

"The new Data by Region navigator provides an efficient and interactive way of accessing data", said Lisa Conolly from the ABS.

Data is available for hundreds of items including, population, births, average income levels, building approvals, number of aged pensioners, business counts, number of motor vehicles, land use, and much more.

For example, did you know that compared with the rest of Tasmania:

• Clarence and Kingborough recorded the most new private sector house building approvals, with 207 and 139 respectively
• Taxpayers in Glenorchy recorded the highest average own unincorporated business income ($30,691 per year) followed by those living in Hobart ($30,362) and Southern Midlands ($23,249)
• Brighton had the highest percentage of persons aged 0-14 years (24.9 per cent), followed by Circular Head (22.0 per cent) and George Town (20.5 per cent)
• The highest number of registered motorcycles were recorded in Kentish (50 per 1,000 population), then Latrobe and West Tamar (both at 45 per 1,000 population)
• The highest number of Centrelink age pension recipients lived in Launceston (7,801), Clarence (6,702) and Glenorchy (6,151)

Regional information is available over a five year period up to 2012, so local communities can track changes over time in the characteristics of their areas.
