TECHNICAL NOTE: UPDATE ON PREVIOUSLY UNPROCESSED NEW SOUTH WALES BIRTHS

In June 2012, the ABS advised users of a systems processing error which has resulted in the undercoverage of birth registrations in NSW from 2005 to 2011. The ABS undertook to investigate the matter and determine appropriate actions to address it.

The data for 2011 have now been corrected and a technical note related to this data has been released in this publication (see Technical Note: Effect of previously unprocessed New South Wales births for more information).

Following further analysis, the ABS has a preliminary indication of the number of unprocessed registrations in each year (2005-2010) and the corresponding year and quarter of occurrence of each registration. This information will be reflected in the final rebased population estimates when they are released in Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0) on 20 June 2013.

Information on the 33,129 previously unprocessed births, on a registration and occurrence basis, can be found in Tables 1 and 2 respectively (see below).

Further processing of the data is required before these estimates can be included in the next issue of Births, Australia (cat. no. 3301.0), which will be released on 24 October 2013.
