In 1999-2000, there were 8,735 persons employed by Tasmanian farm businesses. Of these, 5,150 were either proprietors or partners and 3,585 were paid employees.
The main employing businesses were in vegetable growing (2,063 people), dairy cattle farming (1,890 people), sheep farming (1,489 people) and fruit growing (975 people). The businesses in these four industries made up almost three-quarters of total farm employment.
