From 2001 to 2002, there was a decrease of 6.6% in the number of births in Tasmania. This decrease came after an increase of 13.0% in the number of births between 2000 to 2001.
Between 1998 and 2002, the Greater Hobart-Southern Region recorded the largest increase in the number of births, 6.5%, followed by the Northern Region, 0.9%. The Mersey-Lyell Region recorded a decrease in the number of births of 11.9%.
Between 1998 and 2002, the Flinders local government area recorded the largest percentage increase in the number of births, 100.0% (from 6 births to 12), followed by Brighton, 24.8%, George Town, 23.9%, and Kingborough 23.4%. The Tasman local government area recorded the largest decrease in births over this period, 56.6% (from 53 births to 23).
