The Sports and physical recreation services industry consists of businesses and organisations that generate income predominantly from the provision of sports and physical recreation services, such as horse and dog racing facilities, other indoor or outdoor sporting facilities such as gymnasia, football grounds, swimming pools, bowling alleys etc., sporting associations, sporting administration organisations and sports coaching businesses. Government organisations involved in the provision of sports and physical recreation services are also included.

In 2004-05, there were a total of 250 businesses/organisations engaged in the provision of sports and physical recreation services in Tasmania. These consisted of 30 businesses providing horse and dog racing facilities; 45 businesses providing other types of indoor or outdoor sport and recreation facilities; and 175 organisations providing sporting services such as sporting clubs, coaching and administrative services.
