Dairying is predominantly located along the coastal fringes of the state; however, the highest concentration of milk cattle is found in the Murray Statistical Division (SD). At 30 June 2007, the NSW milk cattle herd stood at 326,000.

At 30 June 2007, 25% of milk cattle in NSW were found in the Murray SD (81,600). This was followed by the Mid-North Coast SD with 54,600.
