The crude birth rate measures the number of live births registered during the calendar year, per 1,000 estimated resident population. From a high of 30.7 recorded in 1912 and 1914 the crude birth rate for Tasmania has generally declined until 1936 after which it increased to a high of 27.7 in 1947. Since 1947 the crude birth rate has generally declined to reach an all time low of 12.1 in 2000 and 2003. In 2004 and 2005 the rate was 12.0 and 13.0 respectively. Until the 1990s, the Tasmanian crude birth rate had usually been higher than the overall rate for Australia.
