At 30 June 2003, there were estimated to be more females than males in all regions of Tasmania.

Children aged 0-14 years - Some 97,311 Tasmanians were estimated to be aged 0-14 years (20.4% of all Tasmanians). The Mersey-Lyell Region had the highest proportion of its population aged 0-14 years (21.1% of the region's population), with 22,615 people. In the Greater Hobart-Southern Region, there were 47,012 people in this age group; and in the Northern Region, there were 27,684.

People aged 15-64 years - Some 312,240 Tasmanians were aged 15-64 years (65.4% of all Tasmanians). The Greater Hobart-Southern Region had the highest proportion of its population aged 15-64 years (66.1% of the region's population), with 155,219 people. In the Northern Region, there were 87,992 people in this age group; and in the Mersey-Lyell Region, there were 69,029.

People aged 65 years and over - Some 67,526 Tasmanians were aged 65 years and over (14.2% of all Tasmanians). In the Northern Region, there were 19,391 people (14.4% of the region's population) aged 65 years and over, and in the Mersey-Lyell Region, there were 15,472 people (14.4% of the region's population) in this age group. In the Greater Hobart-Southern Region, there were 32,663 people (13.9% of the region's population) aged 65 years and over.
