The total Australian population in census tabulations comprises all people counted in Geographical Australia: the six States, Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory, Jervis Bay Territory, and the external Territories of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Prior to 1996, census tabulations excluded Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands from the Australian total but the counts were available separately. See also Confidentiality, Geographical Australia, Other Territories.
