DESCRIPTION
This publication presents information on the status of Australian women. A range of indicators chart women's progress in the following areas population, housing, birth and fertility, health, education and training, employment and unemployment, working life, business, decision making and management, income, earnings and income support, crime and justice, leisure and sport, and voluntary work. Time series data are included wherever possible and comparative data in accordance with international guidelines for women and men are presented. Summary tables of key statistics are included for many of the chapters.
Australian Women's Year Book was published annually by the ABS and the Office of the Status of Women from 1994 -1997. It was then discontinued. However, the ABS has provided similar statistics to the Office of the Status of Women for a statistical appendix to a new publication, Women in Australia: 1999. This publication provides key statistical indicators for women and summary tables for three key population groups: people from non-main English speaking countries; Indigenous people' and rural people. As 1999 was the International Year of Older Persons, a feature article on older women was also included.
