    Purpose
    To enable users to monitor the operation and financial performance of the businesses in the Australian mining and utilities industries.

    Description
    This survey provides information on the structure, activity and performance of businesses in the Australian mining and utilities industries. Data are derived from the Mining and Utilities Collection.
    The mining component of the collection covers the ANZSIC classes for coal mining, oil and gas extraction, metal ore mining, other mining and services to mining.

    The utilities component of the collection covers ANZSIC classes for businesses engaged in the generation, transmission or distribution of electricity; the manufacture of town gas from coal and/or petroleum or the mains distribution of town gas, natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas; the storage, purification or supply of water; or the operation of sewerage or drainage systems including sewage treatment plants.

    Data are collected by mail questionnaire.

    Mineral and petroleum exploration, research and development expenditure, and overseas trade are extracted from other ABS sources.

    In relation to transport, data are available for freight and cartage expenses, rent, leasing and hiring expenses for motor vehicles, and motor vehicle running expenses.

    Data are released annually.
