Purpose
To measure the daily activity patterns of people and the productive activities of households in Australia. The output enables users to study the differences in patterns of paid work, unpaid household and community work between sub-groups.
Description
This survey examines how people allocate time to different kinds of activities. It provides information on time spent on paid work, unpaid housework and shopping, caring for children and people who are frail, sick or who have a disability, community participation, education, leisure and personal maintenance. The 1997 survey has a national sample of approximately 4,550 households (about 8,600 persons). Data were collected by personal interview of householders and from diaries kept by each person aged 15 and over in households. Basic demographic and socio-economic characteristics were collected by interview. These include age, sex, birthplace, employment, education and income. Information was collected by diary on the activities in which people engaged and the time they spent on them.
