Purpose
To provide information on how truck loads and usage patterns vary over time, that is, how much travel is undertaken while empty, partly laden and fully laden.
Description
Data were collected from a sample of 272 businesses by mail questionnaire, trip diary and personal interview. The sample was based on information from yellow pages, Oz-on-disc, state transport directories and other organisations.
Data Detail
Business characteristics:
- Primary business;
- Type of freight carried;
- Size of truck fleet;
- Components owned;
- Number of employees; and
- Number of self-employed persons.
Vehicle diary:
- Truck/trailer/body type;
- Survey period;
- Travel for survey period;
- Date/location/load/freight at beginning of trip; and
- At each nine stops: new vehicle configuration, location, kilometres, load collected and weight, load delivered and weight.
Data collected from personal interview:
- Average load verification and seasonal variation;
- Frequency of using major rural highways;
- Cubic constraints;
- Expected response to increased mass limits; and
- Other matters affecting freight business.

The collection has been conducted only once-in 1994.
