Purpose

To measure the value and quarter to quarter movements of inventories and sales by private businesses in Australia.


Description

This survey produces estimates of inventories, actual wholesale and manufacturers' sales and other selected income items by private businesses in Australia. The survey size expanded from the March Quarter 1999 and it is now based on a stratified random sample of approximately 14,500 private business units selected from the ABS Register of Businesses.

Data are collected by mail questionnaire sent to private businesses every quarter.

  • Manufacturers' and wholesale trade actual sales

    The expanded survey collects data on the Transport and Storage, and Motor Vehicle Retailing and Services industries (from March 1999). For Transport and Storage data is available at the subdivision level of the ANZSIC industry classification. For Motor Vehicle Retailing and Services data is available for selected industries at the class level.

    The previous survey provides sales and inventories data on the motor vehicle and part manufacturing industry. This data is not published but available on request.

    Data are released quarterly.


    Historical Data

    The survey was first conducted in 1947. Data is available as a continuous series (via the ABS PC Ausstats service) from June 1984.
