Purpose
To provide small area employment and travel to work statistics to assist government and other bodies in the development of policies and programs related to transport and urban development.
Description
The Journey to Work data set contains information gathered by the ABS in the Census of Population and Housing on the employment, personal and household characteristics of employed persons aged 15 years and over, enumerated in the TDC Study Area (Greater Sydney Metropolitan Region) on census night. This information is coded to a fine geographic level known as travel zone.
The dataset comprises standard tables, each with a different combination of variables. Therefore, not all variables are available together.
Data Detail
Employment:
- Industry;
- Occupation;
- Work hours;
- Location; and
- Employment status.
Household:
- Income;
- Number of household vehicles;
- Dwelling type; and
- Location.
Person:
- Age;
- Sex;
- Income; and
- Education level.
Geographic Coverage
GMSR (excludes Shoalhaven and Wingecaribee SLA's) in 1981, GMSR (excludes part of Shoalhaven SLA) in 1991, GMSR (Sydney SD, Newcastle SSD and Illawarra SD) in 1996.
Frequency of Data Availability
Data will be available every five years. No data are available for 1986.

Data are available for 1981, 1991 and 1996.
