Introduction

The main geographically based structure of the SACC has been developed giving emphasis to social, cultural, economic and political criteria and to groupings that are relevant to Australia's multicultural society. It is therefore more useful than the UN Standard Country or Area Codes for the collection, dissemination and analysis of country based information in Australia. However, it will sometimes be necessary to convert Australian data to the same basis as the UN classification to enable international comparisons. The concordance below is provided for this purpose.

In some instances, there is not a direct relationship between country groups in the two structures. For instance, the SACC Minor Group Central Asia is composed of some of the countries from the UN groups South-central Asia and Western Asia. Central Asia (SACC) is therefore linked to part of South-central Asia and part of Western Asia. Such partial linkages, at the group level, are indicated by including the word 'part' after the name of the country group involved. For partial linkages, the grouping involving the most linked countries is listed first and countries belonging to this group appear without the name of the group in brackets. Countries belonging to other groupings in the partial linkage appear with the name of their group in brackets.
