Purpose
To provide a comprehensive Australian database of freight movements covering road, rail, sea and air modes as well as pipelines and conveyors.
Description
FreightInfo is a database of all freight flows within, to and from Australia. The data are embodied in an electronic database which can be interrogated to produce tabulated results to the user's specifications.
The database is based on published statistics from many sources plus interviews with freight producers and transport operators.
Data Detail
Data items include:
- Origin and destination (134 zones);
- Commodity carried;
- Mode of transport; and
- Mass in kilotonnes.
The database has its own commodity classification based on 10 major (1-digit) and over 70 minor (2-digit) commodity types. It is tailored for Australian conditions and reflects the relative importance of commodities carried in Australia. This classification tends to reflect the material from which the product is made rather than the degree of value adding.

The following major commodity classifications can be aggregated into the FreightInfo classification at the 2-digit level:
FreightInfo’s commodity classification can be used to infer the economic sector (or industry) which consigned the flow, and the economic sector which received it. For this purpose FreightInfo uses a detailed (4-digit) commodity classification of over 400 commodity types.
Geographic Coverage
Australia, States and Territories, and Statistical Subdivision. Some data may be available at SLA level.
Frequency of Data Availability
The database is updated every three years, with results available approximately 18 months after the year to which they relate.
Historical Data
FreightInfo has been produced on a three-year cycle since 1986-87.
Products and Services
Data and analysis of freight is available in paper format, mapped format and in electronic forms. Analysis of the freight data by FDF might typically include the value of freight movements, modal share, back-loading opportunities, assignment of the freight data to road links, economic evaluation of road projects and pattern of truck movements.
