    Purpose
    To provide estimates of new motor vehicle registrations.

    Description
    New Motor Vehicle Registrations (NMVR) is a monthly collection of the number of new vehicles registered for the first time for normal road use. It is used as a proxy for sales of new vehicles and considered to be a main economic indicator. Data are obtained from State and Territory motor vehicle registration authorities and reflect information contained in registration documents.

    Data Detail
    Original, seasonally adjusted and trend estimates of motor vehicle registrations by:
  • Type of vehicle;
  • Make of vehicle; and
  • Model of vehicle.

    Other characteristics of vehicles which are not published but available on request include:
  • Town name (locality);
  • Area (of registered owner, e.g. capital city, rest of state);
  • Vehicle details:
  • Year of manufacture;
  • Make;
  • Model;
  • Body type;
  • Engine capacity;
  • Number of cylinders;
  • Fuel type;
  • Gross vehicle mass (GVM);
  • Gross combination mass (GCM);
  • Tare;
  • Heavy vehicle registration code;
  • Private/business indicator; and
  • Vehicle fleet indicator.

    Geographic Coverage
    Australia, States and Territories, and residential post code of owner.

    Frequency of Data Availability
    Data are released monthly.

    Historical Data
    Published data are available from 1960. More detailed unpublished data are available from July 1993.
