Purpose
To provide information on the size, structure, operations and output of the wholesale industry.
Description
The last Wholesale Industry Survey (WIS) was conducted in respect of the 1991-1992 reference year. It was based on a sample survey of 11,000 wholesale businesses. Financial information on income, commodity sales, expenses, assets, and liabilities, were collected by mail questionnaire.

Number of businesses/management units;
Persons employed;
Wages and salaries;
Turnover;
Cost of goods sold;
Total assets;
Total liabilities;
Industry gross product;
Performance measures (e.g. turnover ratios) by size of business and ANZSIC group;
Income and expenditure by ANZSIC group; and
Wholesale sales by main commodity items and ANZSIC group.
In relation to transport, data are available for motor vehicle wholesaling.
Geographic Coverage
Australia, States and Territories.
Frequency of Data Availability
Data release is irregular.
Historical Data
The survey was conducted in 1968-69, 1981-82 and 1991-92.
