Product Description

The Community Profile Series contains six separate profiles aimed at providing key Census characteristics relating to persons, families and dwellings and covering most topics on the Census form. The profiles are excellent tools for researching, planning and analysing small and large geographic areas. They enable comparisons to be made between different geographic areas. The profiles which will be available for the 2006 Census will be: Basic Community Profile (BCP), Place of Enumeration Profile (PEP), Indigenous Profile (IP), Time Series Profile (TSP), Expanded Community Profile (XCP) and the Working Population Profile (WPP).

Basic Community Profile

The Basic Community Profile (BCP) is the primary profile. It consists of 45 tables containing key Census characteristics on persons, families and dwellings. The data are based on place of usual residence. The BCP will be released in two phases. First release tables are those containing classifications which are relatively easy to process and will be available on release day. Second release tables contain classifications which require more complex processing and will be available on the second release day. Basic Community Profile Template

Place of Enumeration Profile

The Place of Enumeration Profile (PEP) consists of 42 tables containing key Census characteristics of persons, families and dwellings. The data are based on place of enumeration. It differs from the other Community Profiles in that it provides data on where people were counted on Census Night rather than where they 'usually' live or their 'usual address'. The PEP will be available after the second release phase. Place of Enumeration Profile Template

Indigenous Profile

The Indigenous Profile (IP) consists of 34 tables containing key Census characteristics of Indigenous persons and households. Some tables provide comparisons with the non-Indigenous population. The data are based on place of usual residence. The IP will be released in two phases. First release tables are those tables containing classifications which are easy to process and are available on release day. Second release tables contain classifications which require more complex processing and will be available on the second release day. Indigenous Profile Template

Time Series Profile

The Time Series Profile (TSP) consists of 25 tables containing key Census characteristics of persons, families and dwellings. The data are based on place of enumeration, not place of usual residence (as previously envisaged) due to the unavailability of CD of usual residence in 1996 to concord 1996 SLAs to 2006 SLAs. This profile compares data from the 1996, 2001 and 2006 Censuses and is based on 2006 Statistical Local Area boundaries. Where classifications have been revised, data are output on the classification used for the 2006 Census. To provide comparability between Censuses the revised classifications have been concorded, and footnotes added to the tables to indicate this. Relevant concordance files will be available though the ABS web site. The TSP will be available after the second release phase due to the complexity of concording data over three Censuses. Expanded Community Profile

The Expanded Community Profile (XCP) consists of 42 tables. The data are based on place of usual residence. It is the most comprehensive Community Profile in the series providing extended data on key Census characteristics of persons, families and dwellings. Tables within this profile contain more detailed versions of the standard Basic Community Profile tables, plus additional tables relating to relationships within a family, living costs and dwelling structures. The profile will be available after the second release phase. Expanded Community Profile Template

Working Population Profile

The Working Population Profile (WPP) contains 22 tables of key Census characteristics of employed persons. This data are based on the Journey to Work areas. The profile will be available after the second release phase. Working Population Profile

Output Format

Community Profiles will be available in Excel format from the ABS web site (www.abs.gov.au).

On request, data will be available through information consultancy in Excel, CSV and XML formats.

Any of the Profiles can be produced for an aggregate of standard geographic areas for which the particular profile is available. For example, the Expanded Community Profile could be produced for an aggregate of six SLAs as a consultancy. The aggregations are done on randomised data to ensure security of small area data which would otherwise identify individual persons.

Please note, a charge may apply for data obtained via information consultancy.
