Mayor encourages community to help out with Census

Mayor Cr. Diane Blackwood urged the community to help out the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) by working as field officers for the census which will take place on 9th August 2011.

“I cannot emphasise enough how important census data is for us at the Shire. We use this information to guide us in our Shaping the Future projects, the BawBaw 2050 Vision and in planning and budgeting for the infrastructure our community will need,” said the Mayor.

“Data from the census also helps the State Government determine how to allocate much needed funding for the Shire, as well as plan for roads and transport.

“In many instances, we are still using data from 2006. We need to have accurate up to date figures that demonstrate our massive growth, not just anecdotal data.”

One of the challenges the ABS faces, particularly in rural communities such as Baw Baw Shire, is having adequate field officers available to distribute and collect the census forms and provide information to the community about the census.

The Mayor said working on the census is a vital community based activity.

“The census results make a real difference in defining who we are and what our community will look like into the future,” said the Mayor.

“Census workers are vital for the success of the census and it is important for the ABS to employ field staff who can connect and communicate with, and encourage participation from the community.”

The ABS has advised that Area Supervisors will be required to work part time from 18 April 2011 until 7 October 2011 and will be paid between $4,300 and $7,500 depending on their workload.

The Mayor urged the community to take the census seriously and encouraged residents to become a field officer.
