350 Special Census Collectors needed to count homelessness in NSW

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is looking for around 350 Special Census Collectors to assist in the count of homeless people in NSW for this year's Census.

NSW Census Director Mark Harding says employing Census workers with an understanding of the issues facing those who are homeless is vital in achieving a quality count of rough sleepers.

"We are particularly looking for people in metropolitan areas and large regional centres with experience in the homeless sector, including those who are volunteers and service users," Mr Harding says.

"An accurate count helps decision makers to target and improve services and work towards improving the quality of life for many people."

Warren Welsh, a previous Special Census Collector and former YFoundations board member, and current member of the Burdekin Association, says it's challenging but rewarding work.

"Rough sleepers are, by nature, suspicious and hard to find. You need to get the balance right and be both confident and respectful," Mr Welsh says.

"I found the role really enriching. It can be a sobering experience at times but the enlightening stories and people really make it worthwhile."

Mr Welsh has worked in the homeless sector for nearly 20 years, and says tapping into your local homelessness support networks is really important.

"Good Special Census Collectors go above and beyond to earn respect with their local homeless populations," Mr Welsh adds.

Special Census Collectors will be paid $18 an hour for the casual position and will be employed from 18 July to 13 August.
