Territory Thunder kicks goals for the Census

1 August 2011 | NT/11

Northern Territory Thunder footballers are backing one of the biggest events of the year, the 2011 Census of Population and Housing on Tuesday 9 August 2011.

The team has thrown its support behind the Census, asking all Territorians to accurately complete the form and have their voice heard.

Midfielder Shane Thorne says it’s vitally important all Territorians participate in the Census.

“I will be accurately completing my Census form on 9 August because I know how important it is for future funding of things like sporting facilities and health services in the Territory,” Shane says.

Territory Thunder player Cameron Roberts says the Census provides important information to decision makers and communities to help plan for the future.

"Make sure you identify your Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage on your Census form.

"Remember, the information you give about yourself and your family is kept completely private and protected by law," Cameron says.

Northern Australia Census Regional Director Tom Joseph says the ABS has employed a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers throughout Northern Territory to help ensure an accurate count.

“In regional areas, Indigenous Engagement Managers have been working with remote communities, while in the urban areas, Indigenous Assistants have formed solid partnerships with those living in the city,” Mr Joseph says.

Mr Joseph adds that the information you give about yourself or your family on the Census form is completely secret.

“No other government agency will see your answers. This includes Centrelink, The Department of Housing, The Department of Community Services and the Tax Office.”
