50 Census Collectors hit the streets of Bourke and surrounds

29 July 2011 | NSW/73

50 Census Collectors will hit the streets and roads of Bourke and surrounds to deliver Census forms to all residents of the region and ensure that every person is accurately counted on Census night, Tuesday, 9 August.

CEO of the Bourke and Weilmoringle Land Councils, George Orcher has joined the 2011 Census team as the Census Remote and Mobile Team leader for the Bourke area.

George is passionate about how working on the Census is a great way to give back to the community.

"I've joined the Census team this year to educate locals on how Census information is used to plan for the future of Bourke," George says.

"I've had to fight for funding that has fallen through because the numbers weren't representative of the local Aboriginal community.

“It is so important that we get a better Census count for Bourke so that we don’t miss out on vital services in future.

"So please remember that every one in every household needs to be counted on a Census form. Your privacy is protected by law. No government agency will ever see your answers.

George intends to use all of his community connections to get the count right and is ensuring plenty of support is available.

"Living here all my life, I've got some pretty solid ties with the community and I intend to take advantage of them all to help get a better count.

"Plenty of help and assistance will be available to anyone who may need help filling in their Census form, including the elderly and those with sight or literacy problems," George adds.
