145 Census Collectors hit the streets of the North Shore

29 July 2011 | NSW/65

145 Census Collectors will hit the streets of the North Shore today to deliver Census forms to each and every house and apartment and ensure every person is accurately counted on Census night, Tuesday, 9 August.

Second time Census Area Supervisor Mike Peterson is managing a team of Collectors delivery Census forms to St. Leonards, Crow's Nest and Willoughby.

As a former political journalist, who was on the steps when Gough Whitlam made his famous dismissal speech, Mike is passionate about how the Census helps to inform public policy.

"The Census is all about informing decision makers. Giving governments the information they need to get services right for future generations."

Mike says that accessing apartment blocks will be a challenge.

“High rise buildings are springing up all over this neighbourhood. I live in an apartment block myself and they often have levels of security.

"It's really important for everyone to open their door to their local Census Collector so that they can get their Census form and chat to us about any assistance you might need," Mike says.

The Census option is available for the second time this year and it is expected that 30 per cent of households will complete their Census forms online.

"Everyone I've spoken to are really excited about doing the eCensus this year. It's such a simple and convenient way to participate.

"If you do the eCensus it also means that your Census Collector won't have to return to your house to pick up your completed form," Mike adds.
