2016 Census jobs - register now!

The Census Employment Register of Interest is now open to register your interest for 2016 Census job opportunities.

The register allows you to select positions and locations of interest. At the beginning of each recruitment round, the ABS will notify you when the application period for vacancies in your area open.

The Census offers casual temporary positions, with flexible working hours across a wide range of roles:

Area Supervisors will:
Manage, support and supervise field staff to ensure successful enumeration in their workload. This includes recruitment, training, performance management and some local engagement activities.

Field Officers will:
Undertake the enumeration of every household in their assigned area. This may include delivery and collection of Census materials and contact with non-responding households.

To be successful in these roles, applicants are required to:
  • Undertake a range of procedural, operational and administrative activities, largely governed by set procedures
  • Be of reasonable fitness
  • Have strong attention to detail
  • Be competent with computer, mobile or tablet devices
  • Have the ability to read and navigate maps
  • Be self-motivated, with the ability to work autonomously and make decisions independently, when required
  • Area Supervisor roles will require some management and supervisor experience.

To be eligible for employment, you must:
  • Hold Australian citizenship or have the legal right to work in Australia
  • Undertake pre-employment checks.

Job seekers from diverse backgrounds, including non-English speaking backgrounds and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, are encouraged to register.
