| Nature and content of the 2016 Census Following the announcement that the next Census will be held on 9 August 2016, the ABS has released Census of Population and Housing: Nature and Content, Australia, 2016 (cat. no. 2008). This information paper outlines the nature and content of the 2016 Census, including information on the topics, questions, and processes for conducting the 2016 Census. The Australian Census continues to be one of the most comprehensive Censuses conducted anywhere in the world, with 45 topics. Background In November 2012, the ABS released the information paper 2016 Census of Population and Housing: Consultation on content and procedures, 2016 (cat. no. 2007.0).This paper included proposed changes to the nature and content of the 2016 Census. Public information sessions were held around Australia throughout November 2012. An interactive webinar was also conducted and is available on demand. Interested parties were invited to make submissions in accordance with the submission guidelines about the nature and content of 2016 Census. Submissions closed on 31 May 2013. Key themes emerging from the submissions process were published in the information paper Census of Population and Housing: Submissions Report, 2016 (cat. no. 2007.0.55.001). The rigorous review and public consultation process confirmed that there is strong support for each of the existing Census topics. Therefore, to maintain important time series information and to ensure the 2016 Census can be delivered within allocated funding, 2016 Census topics will be the same as in the previous two Censuses, with minor changes to enhance some questions. The ABS appreciates submissions received from interested parties about the retention of topics and new topics for inclusion in future Censuses.
