2006 Census data

Access 2006 Census data and products

Australia's 15th Census of Population and Housing was conducted on Tuesday 8 August 2006. Data from the 2006 Census is available through the following products.

QuickStats

Simple 'at a glance' summary information about people, families and dwellings for a selected geographic area.

To access data for 2006, select 2006 from the drop-down list in the QuickStats Search box.

Community Profiles

Detailed information about the characteristics of people, families and dwellings for a selected geographic area. Community Profiles are excellent tools for researching, planning, and analysing geographic areas for a number of social, economic and demographic variables.

TableBuilder Basic 2006 (formerly CDATA Online 2006)

An online tool that enables users to construct their own customised tables, graphs and maps of Census data. TableBuilder Basic 2006 replaces CDATA Online, which was available in 2006. This product is available free of charge to registered users.

To register for TableBuilder Basic 2006 go to the Registration Centre. Once registered, users can log in from the TableBuilder page to access TableBuilder Basic 2006.

TableBuilder Pro 2006 (TableBuilder 2006)

An advanced online tool that enables users to construct their own customised tables, graphs and maps of Census data. TableBuilder Pro 2006 provides access to nearly all variables available in the Census data, supporting a wide variety of cross-classified tables. TableBuilder Pro 2006 replaces TableBuilder 2006 and is a charged product available to registered users.

To register for TableBuilder Pro 2006 go to the Registration Centre. Once registered, users can log in from the TableBuilder page to access TableBuilder Pro 2006.

Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA)

Summary measures derived from 2006 Census data, about different aspects of socio-economic conditions by geographic area. SEIFA includes four indexes to allow ranking of regions and areas, providing a method of determining the level of social and economic well-being in each region.

Census Tables

The Census Tables product is no longer available. To access 2006 Census data, use other products available on this page, for example Community Profiles, QuickStats and TableBuilder Basic.

2006 Census DataPacks

The ABS no longer produces or sells DataPack CD-ROMs.

CD-ROM product containing 2006 Census data for all of Australia, down to the Collection District (CD) level, that can be uploaded and manipulated within your own analytical systems. DataPacks include associated Geographic Information System digital boundary files.

2006 DataPacks use the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC), whereas the 2011 DataPacks use the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).

MapStats

The MapStats product is no longer available. To access 2006 Census data, use other products available on this page, for example Community Profiles, QuickStats and TableBuilder Basic.

Social Atlases

A series of publications that use maps to highlight key characteristics of the population in Australia's capital cities and selected regional centres. The maps depict social, economic and housing characteristics based on 2006 Census data. A wide range of topics are covered in the atlases relating to population, cultural diversity, work, housing, families, education and training and economic resources.

Census Sample File (CSF)

A comprehensive Confidentialised Unit Record File (CURF) of 2006 Census characteristics, containing a 1% and 5% random sample of private dwellings and associated family and person records, and a small random sample of persons from non-private dwellings.

The 1% CURF is a Basic CSF available via CD-ROM, the Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL) and an on-site lab service (ABSDL). The 5% CURF is an Expanded CSF which contains similar information to the Basic CSF except that some items are shown in more detail. The Expanded CSF is only available from RADL or the ABS ABSDL.

A Picture of the Nation: The Statistician's Report on the 2006 Census

A national compendium publication containing key Census information relating to persons, families and households. The publication contains tables and graphs with analytical commentary about the statistics presented and includes thematic mapping of data, where appropriate.

2006 Australian Census Analytical Program

A collaborative venture between the ABS and some of Australia's foremost academics. ACAP combines Census data with other information sources to produce articles that cover a range of themes, including life expectancy, diversity, housing and culture.

Mesh Block Counts

Basic Census counts are available for Mesh Blocks. Please note, that the data is only available on the website in GIS (Geographical Information Systems) file formats. No other counts based on Mesh Block boundaries are available for the 2006 Census.
