“Statistical thinking will one day be as necessary for efficient citizenship as the ability to read and write.”
H.G. Wells
The ABS recognises the importance of the schools sector in educating the future decision makers of Australia. The ABS is committed to assisting schools in teaching students the importance of good quality statistical information to support their research and investigation, and to use statistics critically.
After a number of years of servicing the sector in an ad hoc manner, the National Education Services Unit (NESU) was created in 1994. In 2007, the name of the NESU was changed to Education Services. The ABS Education Services unit is located in the Victorian Office as part of the Client Services Branch, however it has national responsibility for servicing the schools sector (from Year 1 through to Year 12).
The objective of Education Services is to:
- promote greater understanding, knowledge and access to ABS statistics by teachers, librarians and students
- increase statistical literacy in the school sector and the broader community
- promote statistics as a career choice for students.
In this role the unit actively assists schools in meeting statistical needs across the education curriculum. Services include:
- development of certain specialist products for use in the curriculum
- selection and promotion of ABS general products suitable for curriculum use
- assistance to authors of curriculum materials who require statistical data.
The ABS range of general products is very extensive and offers information which supports all curriculum learning areas.
Specialist products have also been developed which present statistical information in ‘student-friendly’ formats to meet specific curriculum requirements, including: Measuring Australia's Economy (cat. no. 1360.0) for economics and Statistics a Powerful Edge! (cat. no. 1331.0) for mathematics. Datasets using real ABS data, but tailored specifically for use by students, are also available.
