In 2009, the majority (81%) of young people aged 15-24 years (from a total of around three million) were fully engaged in either education or work. Almost a half (49%) were studying full-time for a qualification, while almost a third (31%) were in full-time employment.

Between 1998 and 2008-09, household access to the internet at home has more than quadrupled from 16% to 72%, while access to computers has increased from 44% to 78%.

Between 1996 and 2006, the number of people reporting that they are Christian grew from around 12.6 million to 12.7 million. Over the same period, those affiliated with non-Christian faiths increased from around 0.6 million to 1.1 million people.

In 2009, the most popular sport for children was swimming with a participation rate of 19% (502,900). This was followed by outdoor soccer at 13% (360,400) and Australian Rules football at 9% (235,100).

In April 2009, the most popular activity for boys was playing a musical instrument (19%), while for girls it was dancing (26%).

According to the 2006 Census, one in four self-employed Indigenous people worked in the Construction industry (26%) and around one in ten worked in the Transport, Postal and Warehousing industries (9%).

As of June 30 2008 the total Broadband connections were at 4.3 million (52% of all households), an increase of 22% on previous year's total.

Of the average daily number of full-time prisoners in Australia in the December quarter 2008, 25,355 (93%) were male and 1,953 (7%) were female. Males were almost 14 times more likely to be in prison than females.
