About ABS Education Services
Who are Education Services?
Education Services is the unit within the Australian Bureau of Statistics dedicated to promoting statistics in schools and assisting teachers and students to increase their statistical literacy.

What is the role of Education Services within the ABS?
Statistics is a life skill. ABS Education Services aims to give the school community the resources, knowledge and confidence to develop this skill and become more confident using, understanding and applying statistics in the classroom.

Where can I find information about a career in statistics?
Education Services has produced a Careers page for students wishing to find out more about the rewarding and exciting opportunities offered by a career in statistics. This page includes an interactive ‘careers wheel’ showing the range and diversity of roles open to a graduate who has studied statistics.

What is CensusAtSchool?
CensusAtSchool is a free internet-based data collection and analysis project. Students from years 5 to 12 collect real data about themselves by completing the CensusAtSchool online questionnaire. Teachers and students are then able to access the questionnaire response data and use it as a classroom resource to explore and investigate any number of topics.

What is the ‘A Tale of Two Worlds’ CD Rom?
‘A Tale of Two Worlds’ is an award-winning interactive CD packed with fun and games. It shows students the Census' role in a democracy and how it allows them to play a part in determining the future of Australia.
The CD ROM can be loaded onto and accessed over your school’s computer network.

What datasets are available for me to use in my classroom?
The ABS has a large range of datasets available online.
The Summary Data pages in the CensusAtSchool home page contain datasets specifically designed for students.

Are all publications on the ABS website free?
Yes, soft copies of all ABS publications are available for free on the ABS website.
How do I access the ABS publications on the web?
To access ABS publications, go to the Statistics page. This page lists the complete subject range of ABS data by catalogue number, release date, topic and title. Alternatively, you can use the search function and enter key words for the publication.

How do I cite ABS sources?
Information from the ABS must be acknowledged responsibly whenever it is used. Please visit Help: How to Cite ABS Sources for details.
Where can I get a copy of the publication, Measuring Australia’s Economy?
Measuring Australia’s Economy (cat. no. 1360.0) is available from the ABS Statistics portal.
I am currently researching the CPI (Consumers Price Index) and AWE (Average Weekly Earnings) for a school based assignment. Where can I find these figures on the ABS web site?
For information about Australia’s economy, start with the Key National Indicators page which can be accessed from the left column of the ABS home page. This page offers a summary of the latest economic data and provides links to various source publications.
Can I still purchase hard copies of publications?
All ABS publications are now available free for download from the ABS website, but if schools wish they may purchase hard copy versions through the National Information Referrals Service (NIRS) and receive a 30% school discount. The ABS recognises that some clients prefer hard copies, particularly of ABS ‘flagship’ publications such as the ‘Year Book Australia’ and ‘Australian Social Trends’.

How do I get a school discount when purchasing hard copies of ABS publications?
To get a 30% school discount, hard copy publications need to be purchased via a school order forwarded to ABS Education Services. Soft copies of all publications are available for free on the ABS website.
