There are many sources of local government area data available free of charge from the ABS website. An easy way to find selected key statistics for your local government area is through the National Regional Profile. The National Regional Profile brings together a range of economic and social data for regions, including local government areas covering a 5 year time period. Alternatively, if you are interested in detailed topic specific data for your area you will find these in subject specific statistical releases.
To find data for your local government area, try looking at the Finding data for Local Government Areas page in the Local Government portal on the ABS website. This page takes you through key sources of local government area data and provides tips and instructions on how to access these.
If you have difficulty finding information for your local government area data in the statistical releases suggested above, try using the search box located in the top right hand corner of the menu bar on each page of the ABS website:
Type in a region name and its National Regional Profile will be suggested in the search results. If you include 'population' in the search, you will also be offered the Estimated Resident Population releases for small areas (ABS cat. nos. 3218.0 and 3235.0).
