WORK IN PROGRESS
Housing Information Development Plan
The ABS is continuing work on a Housing Information Development Plan (IDP). The Housing IDP is an agreement between data users and providers on actions needed to improve housing statistics to meet key policy and research needs. The IDP will identify the information sources currently available in the field of housing statistics, and determine the key data needs not met by these sources. Development of the Housing IDP has been facilitated through a series of workshops/discussions with a range of government, academic and industry stakeholders.
Survey of Income and Housing and Household Expenditure Survey
The 2009-10 Survey of Income and Housing (SIH) and Household Expenditure Survey (HES) have been enumerated and the data is currently being processed. The HES is one of the most important social surveys conducted by the ABS. It is run every six years and provides a vital data source for the analysis of the spending habits of Australian households. Households surveyed in the HES are also included in the Survey of Income and Housing (SIH), which is conducted on an integrated basis with the HES.
In this HES, an extra 3,000 households whose main source of income is from government pensions, benefits and/or allowances have been included in the survey, in addition to the 6,800 households already selected to represent the general population across Australia. This additional sample of households will be used to significantly improve the quality of the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI) by ensuring the goods and services included in the Index are representative of the actual spending patterns of pensioners and other beneficiaries.
In this SIH, the sample size has been almost doubled to 18,000 households. This additional sample will particularly support the development of a new indicator on the proportion of homes sold or built that are affordable by households on low or moderate incomes. The indicator uses income data from the SIH and house sales data sourced from the Land Titles Office, or Valuer General, in each state and territory.
The first results from the 2009-10 SIH and HES are expected to become available from mid 2011.
Measures of Australia's Progress
The next Measures of Australia's Progress publication will include an expanded range of indicators in its housing chapter. The 2010 issue of the publication is expected to be released on September 15. |
