Migrants and their descendants have played a significant role in Australia's history and in shaping the nation we have today. They continue to play important roles in terms of population and workforce growth, and in contributing to our culture and society in many ways.
Statistics provide information on the characteristics of migrants, their descendants and their communities that assists research, policy development, service delivery and program evaluation. For example, one important focus of research is to assess the settlement outcomes for migrants, such as employment, education and general well-being.
The ABS established the National Migrant Statistics Unit (NMSU) in 2006, and since this time the unit has been maintained with ongoing partnership support from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). The role of the NMSU includes:
- maintaining a dialogue with stakeholders on emerging issues, data gaps and needs
- developing statistical surveys related to migrants and ethnicity
- providing statistical leadership and coordination in migrant and ethnicity statistics
- developing statistical standards and analytical concepts
- advancing migrant and ethnicity issues within the ABS
- facilitating client requests for data on migrants and ethnicity.
The NMSU works towards ensuring that a wide range of statistics are made available and accessible.
This Theme Page facilitates access to a range of statistical information about migrants and about ethnicity.
