Outpostings are shaped to meet particular host agency needs. An outposted officer is one way the ABS can provide statistical support to Queensland Government agencies in respect of evidence-based policy development and evaluation.
There are generally two types of outpost services provided by the ABS. A short-term outposting may assist the host agency with a statistical project or issue, which could involve survey and questionnaire design, locating ABS data and related sources, or providing assistance with the acquisition and interpretation of ABS data.
A long-term outposting may facilitate outcomes for furthering statistical priorities for the ABS and the host agency. These outcomes may include sharing of statistical knowledge and skills across government with a focus on the application of the principles of the National Statistical Service (NSS).
The ABS considers outpostings with a strategic benefit providing individual and mutual advantage including:
- the opportunity for ABS to develop a better understanding of emerging policy issues and related statistical requirements of State Government;
- the promotion/implementation of statistical frameworks and standards that allow inter-agency comparisons and comparisons across States to be made;
- the maintenance of professional relationships and engagement between ABS and host agencies.
The ABS Outposted Officer service is available to all Queensland Government agencies and may be subject to a fee for service basis, dependant on the requirements of the host agency.
