New South Wales - Outposted ABS Officers

The ABS outposts staff to Government agencies with the aim of extending the National Statistical Service (NSS), promoting wider awareness, understanding and use of ABS statistics, and promoting national standards and classifications.

The main functions of Outposted Officers are:

  • provide ongoing statistical advice to the agency;
  • provide assistance with the acquisition and interpretation of ABS data as required by their agency and advise on their use for policy and program purposes;
  • communicate the information needs of their agency to the ABS, and facilitate input into statistical activities;
  • provide input into the statistical activities of their agency to ensure maximum compatibility with standard definitions and classifications, to minimise duplication and to help maintain adequate standards of data quality;

The ABS will support outposting when they:
  • align with ABS and National Statistical Service goals;
  • build statistical capability in the client agency;
  • are strategic in nature; or
  • involves cross agency or whole of government approach.

The ABS Outposted Officer service is available to all New South Wales Government agencies and will be subject to a fee for service basis, dependant on the requirements of the host agency.

For information regarding an ABS outposting contact the Director of Statistical Coordination on (02) 9268 4238, email nsw.statistics@abs.gov.au.
