Australian Capital Territory - Outposted ABS Officers

Outpostings are shaped to meet the particular statistical needs of an agency. The ABS ACT Regional Office engages with its users by outposting statistical officers to ACT government agencies to facilitate access to, and understanding of, statistics whilst strengthening statistical coordination across these agencies.

The Information Development Plan 2008-2011 (IDP) developed between the ACT Regional Office and the ACT Government focuses on improving data comparability, improving quality standards, protecting confidential information and developing consistent statistical concepts and terminology. The key activities identified in the IDP include identifying datasets held by departments, increasing the capability within departments for research and analysis and improving the suite of existing ABS statistics for the ACT. An ABS Outposted Officer can work with a department to progress the key activities outlined in the IDP.

As outpostings are developed specifically for a host agency, two types of outpost services are provided by the ABS:

    • a short-term outposting - this could address the priorities of the IDP or may assist the host agency with a statistical project or issue, which could involve survey and questionnaire design, locating ABS data and related sources, or providing assistance with the acquisition and interpretation of ABS data.
    • a long-term outposting may facilitate outcomes for furthering statistical priorities for the ABS and the host agency. These outcomes may include sharing of statistical knowledge and skills across government with a focus on the application of the principles of the National Statistical Service (NSS).
In considering possible outpostings, the ABS considers those with a strategic benefit providing individual and mutual advantage including:
    • the opportunity for ABS to develop a better understanding of emerging policy issues and related statistical requirements of ACT Government;
    • the promotion/implementation of statistical frameworks and standards that allow inter-agency comparisons and comparisons across states and territories to be made;
    • the maintenance of professional relationships and engagement between ABS and host agencies.
The ABS Outposted Officer service is available to all ACT Government agencies.
