Northern Territory - Outposted ABS Officers
  

Outpostings are shaped to meet particular host agency needs. An Outposted officer is one way the ABS can provide statistical support to Northern Territory Government and other agencies (eg Universities, Non Government Organisations and Research Agencies) in respect of evidence-based policy development and evaluation.

There are generally two types of outpost services provided by the ABS. A short-term outposting may assist the host agency with a statistical project or issue, which could involve survey and questionnaire design, locating ABS data and related sources, or providing assistance with the acquisition and interpretation of ABS data.

A long-term outposting may facilitate outcomes for furthering statistical priorities for the ABS and the host agency. These outcomes may include sharing of statistical knowledge and skills across government with a focus on the application of the principles of the National Statistical Service (NSS) and National Data Network (NDN).

The ABS considers outpostings with a strategic benefit providing individual and mutual advantage including:

  • the opportunity for ABS to develop a better understanding of emerging policy issues and related statistical requirements of State Government;
  • the promotion/implementation of statistical frameworks and standards that allow inter-agency comparisons and comparisons across States to be made;
  • the maintenance of professional relationships and engagement between ABS and host agencies.

ABS OUTPOSTING TO TREASURY

ABS has an ongoing Outposted Officer arrangement with Northern Territory Treasury. The broad objective of the outposting to NT Treasury is to improve statistical outcomes for Northern Territory Government and the community. This outposting recognises the key statistical coordination roles of both NT Treasury (within NT Government) and ABS.
