STATISTICAL POLICY COMMITTEE (SPC)

The SPC provides the State representative on the Australian Statistical Advisory Committee and the Regional Director, Western Australia, ABS, with information on the State Government's overall policy priority areas and resulting statistical priorities. The committee also identifies and develops the State's own statistical data sources and improves the statistical basis of informed decision making by the State Government.

Issues dealt with by the SPC include: National Statistical Service project issues, determining State Statistical Priorities and endorsement of the State Supplementary Survey topics.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL STATISTICS CONSULTATIVE GROUPS (ESCG AND SSCG)

The ESCG and SSCG promote coordination and communication of economic and social statistical activities between ABS and member agencies. Members consist of government agencies and organisations which meet on a regular basis to discuss statistical issues. These meetings provide a great opportunity to share information on ABS developments and initiatives being undertaken by members.

STATE STATISTICAL PRIORITIES PROCESS
The ABS conducts annual reviews of the information needs of State and Territory governments, with the aim of improving the relevance and quality of the statistical services we provide. In Western Australia, this process involves consultation with State agencies to ascertain their strategic information needs over the next few years. Prime consideration is given to important and emerging issues that are relevant to the Western Australian Government's policies. Consideration is also given to data provision issues including accuracy and relevance, as well as broader statistical framework issues, e.g. classifications and standards. The consultation process is also used to identify statistical training needs.

The issues raised in the State Statistical Priorities process form the basis of a consolidated paper, which feeds into ABS local and national forward planning processes.
