GOVERNMENT AGENCIES STATISTICAL COMMITTEE (GASC)

GASC is a collaborative forum that facilitates consultation regarding a variety of statistical issues between the South Australian Government and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) including the provision of advice to the ABS. The committee has a strategic whole-of-government responsibility to seek out opportunities to improve State Government statistical infrastructures. GASC also facilitates the use and availability of a high quality, effective and efficient statistical environment for informed South Australian Government decision making.

GASC membership is made up of (at least) one member from each South Australian Government department who are generally drawn from the corporate or portfolio planning and policy areas.

STATISTICAL LIAISON OFFICER NETWORK

The Statistical Liaison Officer network aims to engender effective communication between the ABS and state government agencies. If the ABS better understands your work in the state government, your statistical needs and priorities, then it can deliver to you better, more relevant, statistics.

To this end, staff within state government departments are sought to act as Statistical Liaison Officers (SLOs). SLOs inform the ABS about their department’s needs including statistical activities, requirements and uses. They also provide information to the ABS on the nature and extent of data being collected by their agency, including the availability of data for other users. The ABS will keep SLOs informed of upcoming ABS developments which may be of interest such as new surveys, publications, definitional changes, research work being done by other agencies and ABS information seminars.

An individual ABS staff member (an SLO Engagement Officer) is assigned to each state government agency. Their role is to engage with the SLOs in the agency, develop an understanding of the type of work undertaken in the agency and answer any question about statistics - ranging from specific data needs to broader, more conceptual queries. While SLO Engagement Officers may not have all of the answers, they will be able to facilitate the appropriate contacts or solutions within the ABS. By understanding the work undertaken in the agency the ABS can better serve State Government statistical needs.

We’re always looking to strengthen our relationship with the State Government, so if you’re interested in becoming an SLO, please email our SLO Coordinator at sa.statistics@abs.gov.au.

STATE STATISTICAL PRIORITIES PROCESS

The ABS conducts annual reviews of all State and Territory government information needs, with the aim of improving the relevance and quality of statistical services provided by the ABS. In South Australia, this process involves wide consultation with all State agencies to ascertain their strategic information needs in the near future. Prime consideration is given to important and emerging issues relevant to South Australian Government policy. Consideration is also given to data provision issues including accuracy and relevance, as well as broader statistical framework issues such as classifications and standards. The consultation process is also used to identify statistical training needs.

Issues raised in the State Statistical Priorities process form the basis of a consolidated national paper from all State and Territory governments, which feeds into ABS local and national forward planning processes.
