Back to CensusAtSchool home page CasQ 35A – Drawing a Box and Whisker of Foot Length

You can download this activity as a rich text file (RTF) using the link at the bottom of the page.

The following random sample of foot lengths was obtained using the CensusAtSchool random sampler:

Q12. Right Foot (cm)

1. Use the space below to rewrite the data in ascending order.

2. Show the 5 figure summary statistics (min, Q1, med, Q3, max) in the table below.

3. Use an appropriate scale to draw parallel box and whisker plots on the number line below. Consider any possible outliers and be prepared to explain whether or not they should be included in the data.

4. Comment on the significant similarities and differences for male and female foot length.

5. Visit the CensusAtSchool website and collect your own random sample. Use the sample to construct another set of parallel box and whisker plots to compare with the one above.

: CASQ 35B follows on from this lesson.
