INDUSTRY AND OCCUPATION
Data Constraints
Industry and occupation data are collected via the Census and the Labour Force Survey (LFS). Although the LFS industry and occupation figures are generally higher than Census data, the proportions of people in each industry and occupation category are similar at the broad level. The Occupation and Industry topic includes data from the 2006 Census (cat.no. 4713.0).
Occupation
Occupation is collected on the main job held by employed people aged 15 years and over during the week prior to Census night. The occupation is coded according to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) First Edition, 2006 (cat. no.1220.0).
Industry
Industry/Industries refers to the type of product or service that is produced by businesses and organisations in which employed people 15 years and over work. For the 2006 Census, a person's industry was classified based on the response to a series of questions on the Census form. The Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 (cat. no.1292.0) is used to classify the responses given to the Industry questions.
